Résumé : |
Within the European union, biocidal product is defined as a chemical substance or micro-organism with the intention of destroying, deterring, rendering harmless, preventing the action of, or otherwise exerting a controlling effect on, any harmful organism by any means other than mere physical or mechanical action (Regulation (EU) 528/2012).
A paint contains pigments and binders. Additives and solvents, such as water are added to optimise the paint performance. The paint formulation is often a liquid formulation due to the ease of application to reach the protective, aesthetic and other intended functions a coating film may have in order to protect the substrate beneath. Despite this, about half of the material is lost during paint film formation.
Due to environmental and health and safety concerns there has for many years, been a trend to switch the paint medium from organic solvents to water. The formulations had to be re-designed to incorporate a hydrophobic paint binder into a hydrophilic water medium. Furthermore, the addition of water into the formulation makes the can a suitable habitat for micro-organisms, such as bacteria, algae and fungi, which can survive in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. That is the place the paint is stored after production until application and use of the peint. The traditional way to prepare a peint has been to optimise all paint parameters and towards the end, add sufficient amount of biocide ta inhibit microbiological growth. |
