The purpose was to improve the reliability of accelerated test procedures by selecting test conditions that improve the simulation of the degradation processes that occur during outdoor exposure. Results from Florida exposure and accelerated exposure tests were evaluated using an acceleration factor based on the light dose needed to cause a certain reduction in gloss. The results indicate that agreement between accelerated tests and Florida exposure is improved when a test sequence simulating acid rain is included in the accelerated test cycle. XénonIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The cure rate of a high gloss overprint varnish was compared using a standard medium pressure mercury lamp and a high intensity xenon chloride lamp. Samples with equal photoinitiator concentration cured at a much faster rate using the xenon chloride lamp. It was found that the concentration of the photoinitiator could be greatly reduced and still give rapid rates of curing when the xenon chloride lamp with peak output at 308 nm was used. PolyoxypropylèneIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Structure-performance relationships in advanced epoxy resins flexibilized with segments of polyalkylene oxide were studied in electrocoat formulations to determine the effects of alkylene oxide type, oxide block length, and total oxide loading on coating properties. Corrosion resistance and flexibility/adhesion improve with the use of short oxide blocks and at the higher end of the oxide loading ranges studied, with propylene oxide being the preferred alkylene oxide. A two-stage procedure for copolymerization provides further enhancement of corrosion resistance. The structure-performance relationships found in this work are expected to apply to the use of similar resins in lower VOC waterborne, higher solids, and/or higher flow powder formulations. Réticulation (polymérisation)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The synthesis and initiator-free photopolymerization of the following aliphatic monomer, containing both a vinyl ether group (electron donor) and a maleimide group (electron acceptor), is described: N-[5-(2-(vinyloxy)ethyloxy carbonyl) pentyl] maleimide (1). The polymerization reaction was followed with UV- and IR-measurements. It was shown that irradiation with a high power microwave lamp, without the presence of photoinitiators, resulted in very fast and efficient curing. This donor-acceptor monomer was also shown to be useful as a photoinitiator for the polymerization of acrylate monomers. Note de contenu :

Revêtements en phase aqueuse:Peinture en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : We have investigated the deflocculation mechanism of waterborne jet black dispersions made in the dry-grind process based on the two-roll milling. We also compared this dry-grind process with the conventional wet media grind process. As a result, we found that:(1)High jetness in the dry-grind process was found to result from complete surface coverage of the carbon black pigment with the acidic acrylic dispersant during the two-roll milling step. This complete surface coverage is achieved because the dry dispersant molecules before neutralization do not have electrostatic repulsion among them.(2)The amount of adsorption for the dry grind is three times as great as that for the wet grind.(3)The stabilization mechanism is due to steric repulsion imparted by the adsorbed dispersant molecules, and the electrostatic repulsion is an insignificant force for stabilization.(4)High temperature in the chip dissolution step lowers the jetness owing to the decrease in the solubility of the dispersant at higher temperatures.
