The importance of an equation of this type lies in the fact that one variable could be obtained from the other, which is particularly useful when intending to perform calculations for determining the LCPVC (the critical pigment volume concentration of waterbased paints or latex (emulsion) CPVC), which requires some knowledge of the value of the WAI of the pigmentary system. Where revious works have related LCPVC to resin particle size, here the resin and the pigmentary system particle sizes are not consideres independently, and the expression which is deduced is a function of the ration between them. By using an idealised "compact spheres model", based on the theoretical CPVC definition, a new model expression is developed to mathematically determine the LCPVC. The proposed model is semi-theoretical in nature, since it requires the use of constants which have been obtained experimentally by other authors.
