Tannage Résumé : According to Greenpeace International, textile manufac-turing makes use of a diverse range of process and finishing chemicals, some of which have intrinsic hazardous properties. Greenpeace's 2011 Detox report concerns hazardous, persistent and hormone-disrupting chemicals in the textile industry. The aim is to eliminate all hazardous chemi-cals across the entire textile supply chain: nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPEs), carcinoge-nic amines, phataltes (butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), di-2- ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and Diisononylphtalate (DINP)) and other chemicals.
The European Regulations have similar objectives.
- The aim of the Water Frame-work Directive (WFD) is to protect and restore surface and groundwater bodies in order to rich ecological and chemical status of these water bodies.
- REACh (EC 1907/2006), the European regulation on Che-micals (Registration, Evalua-tion, Authorization and restriction of Chemicals) has the objective to decrease sub-stances of very high concern that is to say carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to repro-duction (CMRs); persistent, bio-accumulative and toxic (PBTs); The aim is to improve the protection of human health and the environment through the better and earlier identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical sub-stances.
Is the tanning industry ready ftilfill requirements on hazar-dous chemicals? What chemi-cals of the tanning industry could be affected by these stach holders? This paper is a contribution which purpose is to identify the relevant chemicals and assess the prevalent ones.Note de contenu : - Identification of the potential chemicals for the tanning industry

Titre : X-Tan - the new innovative organic tanning system Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Chris Tysoe, Auteur ; Marc Hombeck, Auteur ; Dietrich Tegtmeyer, Auteur Année de publication : 2011 Article en page(s) : p. 42-46 Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Tannage Tags : 'X-tan' 'X-white' Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : There is an increasing demand for leather articles based on wet-white intermediates. Due to the known limitations of the traditional wet-white processes, Lanxess, one of the largest suppliers to the leather market, are introducing the next generation tanning technology named X-Tan. This process follows a completely different chemical route and addresses most of the current issues.
Virtually all leather articles can be made with X-Tan. Testing has highlighted some valuable advantages such as virtual whiteness of the intermediate (resulting in the name X-white), brilliant colours and advanced physical properties of the leather. Critical health and safety issues have been met, combined with improvements in sustainability and some potential commercial advantages for the tanner. X-Tan is also easy to handle during application and is environmentally friendly.Note de contenu : - The tanning chemistry

Tannage au chromeIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Leather is sold on the basis of its area whereas hides are bought by weight. The relationship between the input weight (kg) of a particular raw material and the final area (ft2) obtained from the same material is called its "yield". The importance of accurate information about the area yield, therefore, can hardly be over-emphasised. Unfortunately, very little published information is available on this subject. Haines, based on her work at the British Leather Manufacturers' Research Association, reported that there is no significant correlation between
the raw weight and the yield of leather. She found a good correlation when yield was calculated on the basis of raw area vs. finished area, but hardly any raw hides are sold on area basis. Therefore, yield of the leather in its present connotation should be used judicially to work only as a management tool for evaluation of a particular type of
hide and of the productionNote de contenu : - Table 1 : Effect of paste drying and vacuum drying on yield and selection of corrected grain leather from USA hides

Tannage au zirconium
Vêtements en cuirIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Increasing environmental consciousness has impacted on the pollution caused by chrome tanning which has become a difficult problem requiring an urgent solution leading to studies on chrome-free tanning system. A new zirconium-oxazolidine combination tanning system has been developed. The amount of zirconium-oxazolidine has been optimized at 2.5 % and 3.0 % (based on limed weight of skins). The influence of ligands on the shrinkage temperature (Ts) of leathers has also been studied and zirconium-oxazolidine combination tanned leathers showed Ts above 92°C. Zirconium-oxazolidine tanned sheep garment leather is much whiter than the chrome tanned, being close to the standard whiteness. The degradation rate of zirconium-oxazolidine combination leather is 18.83 % after 45 days soil burial and is much quicker than that of chrome tanned leather which is 5.78 % after 45 days. SEM observation revealed that the non-degraded surface structure was more regular than that of chrome leather degraded for 30 days. The zirconium-oxazolidine combination tanned leather degraded more easily than chrome leather, which is of benefit for the sustainable development of the leather industry.
