Cuir -- Teneur en chrome hexavalent

Cuirs et peaux -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Since 2015, a European restriction limits the hexavalent chromium content to not more than 3 mg/kg in leather products (UE-301-2014, 25 March 2014, §47, annex XVII of REACh). Owing to spectrophotometric interferences encountered with the established European standard EN ISO 17075:2007 when colored leathers have to be analyzed, this article proposes the analysis of hexavalent chromium using ion chromatography with post-column derivatization and spectrophotometric detection. In order to avoid any pre-treatment of the crude extract an on-line solid phase extraction step is introduced by inserting a high capacity reversed phase guard column. The efficiency of the on-line purification is demonstrated (quantitative removal of the dye present in the extract) and allows the direct analysis of crude extracts in less than 6 minutes. The overall chromatographic method is validated following procedures described by the French standard NF T90-210. The measurement error (bias) was determined at 7.2% at the presupposed limit of quantification 5 µg/L (corresponding to a hexavalent chromium content of 0.25 mg/kg in leather) and at the medium concentration level and at 4.0% for the high-level concentration, with relative standard deviations of 5.1%, 2.9% and 2.4% respectively. The recovery yields measured with spiked leathers range from 92 to 96% depending on the hexavalent content. The reliability of the method is also demonstrated through two inter-laboratories test involving several European laboratories. The crucial influence of the sample preparation is also assessed in this work. It is demonstrated that the hexavalent chromium content of leathers is systematically underestimated when the extraction is applied to leathers cut in small pieces and not ground. In parallel, additional tests on leather sampling location show that the shoulder zone is not representative of the rest of the skin in terms of hexavalent chromium content since it has a higher hexavalent chromium content than all other sampling zones. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : During hide wet processing, partial hydrolysis of polypeptide bonds generates free carboxylic and amino groups. Experiments in both static and dynamic conditions point out the appearance of significant ion-exchange properties. A method for leather ion-exchange capacity measurement is presented. The values obtaines about 2.0 mval/(g.dry substance) for cation exchange and 0.62 mval/g.dry substance) for anion exchange compare well with the ones for other natural and synthetic ion exchangers. Titre : Ions eluted from leathers and their corrosiveness to metals Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Yasumasa Chonan, Auteur ; Hiroshi Okamura, Auteur ; Keiji Yoshimura, Auteur Année de publication : 1992 Article en page(s) : p. 409-418 Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : It is well known that metals annexed to leathers are easily corroded and various kinds of troubles come from this corrosion. However, the reasons for this corrosion have not been clarified.
The present study has been made only for chrome-plated steel pipes.
In the corrosion of steel annexed to leather, chloride ion eluted from leather is considered to be the main factor for the corrosion except in a few cases. In addition to chloride ion, eluted sulfate ion is thought to be the secondary factor although its effect on corrosion was observed although much chloride ion was eluted.
This may be explained by the fact that there is no contact between a steel pipe and eluted chloride ion due to limited water vapor permeability of a leather surface in contact with a steel pipe or there is a painted surface on a pipe.
If a different kind of metal is annexed to leather, different kinds of eluted ions may be considered to be responsible for corrosion of the metal.

CuirIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The aim of this work is to determine whether it is feasible to reduce the time required to condition leather prior to physical testing, whilst still ensuring accurate and reliable results.
The method SLP 3 / IUP 31 describing the conditioning of leather was first published as an official method in the Journal of the Society of Leather Technologists and Chemists in 1958.2 (It was previously published for comment in 19493). There has been little change since this date. The latest version does acknowledge that in some cases there is the need for rapid conditioning, although this is not widely used in industry due to the possibility of arbitration which still requires the full 48 hour process (suggesting that the rapid method may not be producing the same results as the standard conditions). The aim therefore is to reduce the time required to carry out some key tests, but not necessarily to remove the requirement for the official standard. It is hoped that alternative options will be devised for those tanneries and test houses where 48 hours effective dead time prior to testing is a significant problem. A separate issue that is under discussion is the use of the different conditions 23oC, 50%RH. Whilst it is acknowledged that there are issues of importance in this area, these have not been considered in this research. The work published here uses the UK standard of 20oC, 65% RH.Note de contenu : - Aims of this work
