In the final section of the presentation, we discuss some of the critical decisions facing the UK sheepskin industry for the 21st Century. Tannage au chromeIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In spite of the considerable progress made in the technical development of leather manufacture, there are still many problems as far as liming and tanning are concerned. Labor is hard and dirty for the worker. Therefore, tanners are working in one drum or mixer, from soaking to chrome tannage, without changing the vessel. The tanner bypasses mechanical treatment, such as fleshing, splitting, and cleaning the grain side, although even today these processes are of great importance and should be placed after liming, where they are there better situated than in soaking or after chrome tannage.
However, the beamhouse processes create the most problems with respect to the effluent. This contains large amounts of proteins, sulfide, and lime, and the volume is still very large today.
I would like to present to you a process which has been published in an initial form in JALCA in the December, 1973, issue. In the meantime, some improvements have been made.
The process can be divided into three parts. The first part is a painting step from the hair side, performed in the manner of a conveyer belt process, and lasting 1/2 hour. The second part is a treatment with ten percent sodium peroxide solution to open up the hide structure. It takes one hour. This treatment is stopped by neutralization with acid. The third part covers the following processes : fleshing, splitting, pickling, and chrome tanning.

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : As part of an investigation into the feasibility of removing from a hide some or all of its decorin while it is being processed into leather, we studied the effects on the physical characteristics of the leather of subjecting the hide to vigorous proteolysis. We used two proteolytic enzyme preparations, one during reliming, and the second for bating post liming. The first is a commercially produced alkaline protease (AP). Extending the work of Alexander in England and of Kronick at Eastern Regional Research Center, ARS, USDA, we found that, for each observed physical property, viz., tensile strength (Smax), Young's modulus (Y), and extensibility (E), the value for the AP-treated samples differed from the corresponding control value by < 6-8% (the least significant difference), thus demonstrating that AP does not adversely affect any of the three physical characteristics. The AP-treated hides are, however, substantially softer and more flexible than the controls. The second protease preparation is one that we made from a halophile selected because it does not produce collagenase. This protease is active in 4M NaCl at a mildly alkaline pH. Bating with the halophile protease in 4M NaCl was found to yield a leather with satisfactory physical characteristics (Smax, Y, and E). High salt concentration will be used experimentally to loosen the tight (albeit non-covalent) bonding of decorin to collagen, thus rendering the proteoglycan more susceptible to proteolysis and removal from the hide.
Son objectif est de produire des biens et services tout en limitant fortement la consommation et le gaspillage des matières premières, et des sources d'énergies non renouvelables ;
