Despite their considerable fat content, these wastes do not find important usage. Their disposal is also troublesome and costly. We have investigated the possible use of this fat in the production of biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters) by transesterification, for use as a replacement for fossil fuels. The fat was released from the waste by boiling with water under high speed grinding, dried and used without further refining for the production of fatty acid methyl esters. Evaluation of the product indicated that it was suitable for use as a biodiesel fuel. Thus, a contaminating waste can be transformed into an environmentally friendly fuel, providing economical and ecological profits. Titre : Utilization of leather waste - animal feedstuff for chrome shavings : Part 1, pilot plant study Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : M. Alves dos Reis, Auteur ; V. Beleza, Auteur Année de publication : 1991 Article en page(s) : p. 15-19 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In this paper we present experimental results on the hhydrolysis of chrome tanned shavigs.
It was observed that it is possible to remove chromium down to negligible values (less than 0.1 ppm) when hydrolysis is performed by heating the shavings at 80°C in calcium oxide liquors using the following weight proportions : 0.08 to 0.1 parts CaO, 1 part dried chrome shavings (equivalent to 21 parts wet shavings), 10 parts water. A protein concentrate containing about 80 % crude protein and 25 % essential amino acids was obtained.
An animal nutrition program to study the possible uses of this product was initiated. To obtain enough protein concentrate for this program a pilot plant has been designed and built.
Chicken feeding results have shown that the nutritional value of hydrolysed leather meal is nearly one half of thenutritional value of 44 % protein soybean oil meal and, when used in rations up to a level of 5 % has not caused any loss of appetite or visible metabolic problems to the animals.

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In this paper a model is presented to describe the kinetics of the hydrolysis of blue shavings by hot calcium hydroxide solutions.
We conclude that above 40°C the reaction velocity is controlled by chemical reaction, the diffusion of OH- inside the shavings being a fast process. Temperatures below this limit are of no technical interest and were not investigated.
In the proposed model the conversion of splits into soluble proteins (fraction of hydrolysed shavings) is expressed as a 3rd degree polynomial, where the independent variable is time and the coefficients are functions of temperature.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/15XEvK0qRNqNA4IO2AD9j7XFl9rm-UbUx/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8674

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In order to compete in today's market, we must improve our performance levels in both quality and delivery. To satisfy our customers' standards we must set up our quality and delivery systems to meet just-in-time demands where a late-or off-quality shipment interferes with their productivity. Improvements can be made in our manufacturing systems by redirecting our existing resources toward the process, emphasizing prevention instead of detection. Adoption of process control will create a feedback system where efforts are future-oriented and directed toward continuous improvement.
