SérigraphieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The reduction of dot gain in half-tone printing is desirable in order to accurately reproduce designs in printed format. An important contribution to dot gain is the spreading of ink on the substrate after image formation but prior to immobilisation by curing or drying. The spreading of a typical screen ink was modelled to determine the thermodynamic processes controlling the rate of drop spreading and the timescales over which they are significant. Suggestions are offered as to the characteristics desirable in polymer substrates in order to minimise dot spreading.

Hybrid coatings were prepared by changing the organic-inorganic ratio, the PFPE/PCL ratio in the copolymer, and the reaction conditions. A complete surface characterisation was carried out by contact angle analysis and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). In all cases the wettability of the coatings was found to be very low. Surface composition analysis showed that the surface segregation of the fluorinated PFPE segments was always high enough to give a very high hydrophobic character to the coating surface. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The development of new binders used for coatings has traditionally been driven by a combination of the need for technical improvements and increased environmental awareness, together with stricter legislation regarding VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions. One interesting way to achieve new types of binders is to combine already existing ones, thereby exploiting the positive properties of both. In the present study, a combination of an alkyd and an acrylic dispersion was used to produce a potential hybrid binder. The structures of the binders both in the liquid state and in films prepared from the hybrids were studied using several microscopy techniques. It was found that the preparation method of the hybrids affected the morphology to a large extent, and the structural information was also linked to the rheological behaviour of the hybrids as well as to the mechanical properties of the final binder films. Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A nanocomposite suspension made of redispersable crystalline In2O3·Sn (ITO) nanoparticles and a hybrid organic-inorganic additive was prepared to obtain single 600nm-thick, transparent, electrically-conducting layers. The rheology of the suspension was adjusted so that the formulations could be used to coat different glass and polymer substrates and foils using wet chemical deposition techniques such as spin coating, dip coating, spray coating and web coating. The optical properties (transmission, reflection, absorption) showed that the layers transmitted more than 87% in the visible range, acted as infrared (IR)-shielding coatings for (λ>1.5µm, and effectively reduced the intensity of solar light (Air Mass (AM) 1.5 Global solar spectrum). At the same time, the layers acted as UV blockers for wavelengths less than 400nm, protecting the polymer substrates and foils from degradation when exposed to UV irradiation. The layers exhibited a high conductivity (σ- 1100Sm−1) which made them useful for electrostatic and antistatic purposes as well as for devices that require a transparent conducting coating with sheet resistance higher than a few kΩp[. Furthermore, the layers showed excellent adhesion on all substrates and high resistance against abrasion and weathering degradation, results that are quite promising with respect to their outdoor use. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The application of a dinuclear manganese complex (MnMeTACN) as a catalyst in the oxidative drying of alkyd coatings is described. Experimental results on the film properties (drying time and film hardness) for various solvent- and water-borne alkyd coatings demonstrate that MnMeTACN is a potential alternative for commercially-available Co- and Mn-based catalysts. MnMeTACN appears to be suitable for both water-borne and solvent-borne alkyd systems. Confocal Raman microscopy is used to study the depth profile of the drying of alkyd coatings catalysed by different catalysts, and it has been found that slow surface drying is somewhat compensated by relatively fast deep layer drying. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Oxazoline derivatives of the mixture of fatty acids found in tall oil were used as a reactive diluent for two types of alkyd polymers. The polymers had relatively good solubility in the oxazoline and solutions with moderate viscosity were obtained. Films made from the polymer solutions showed little property development at ambient temperatures even after several days. However, films cured at elevated temperatures had good properties in terms of solvent resistance, hardness and gloss. The degree of property development depended on the length of time the films remained at an elevated temperature. Note de contenu : - Table 1 : Polymer characterisation and solution viscosity results

The presence of these PTFE particles in the coating material makes it possible for the water-repellency properties of this material to be improved by achieving a water contact angle of more than 150. The photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 particles incorporated in the water-repellent coating inhibits the surface contamination which previously had caused the deterioration of the water-repellent properties. This water-repellent coating can be applied to mobile phone microphones. The water repellency of the electret condenser microphone improves the durability of the mobile phone.
