Résumé : |
Car paintwork has to withstand a wide range of stresses and therefore at least four different coats are generally applied to vehicle bodies. Until now there has been no non-destructive method of measuring the thickness of these multi-layer coatings on metal or plastic, but terahertz technology will soon change that. |
Note de contenu : |
- Operation
- Comparing terahertz technology
- Other applications
- Fig. 1 : The terahertz pulse penetrates the plastic coating and is partially reflected at the material boundaries. The software calculates the thickness of each layer on the basis of the delay time of the reflections
- Fig. 2 : Terahertz technology will make quality assurance processes noticeably more efficient, in particular in the automotive industry
- Fig. 3 : When measuring a wedge cut, terahertz technology compares favourably with established methods, such as microscopy and magnetic induction |
