The process utilizes the direct dissolution of pulp in an organic solvent (NMMO), which is almost completely recovered and re-used. Due to closed loop production, the process is highly sensitive to any additional chemicals or contaminations that may be introduced into the system. However, precise process adaption enabled the production of highly incorporated (filled) Tencel fibers on commercial scale for the first time. The functional additive used for the production of Tencel R100 is of natural origin and adds flame barrier forming properties to this novel fiber-type. Tencel R100 is already successfully used as flame barrier material in the US mattress market and shows additional potential for applications in personal protective clothing and other interesting areas. Combining cellulose, an eco-friendly production process and a functional additive of natural origin perfectly complements the high level of sustainability of Tencel fibers.
