Résumé : |
Photochromic pigments are micro-encapsulated particles having photochromic cycles in it. The process in which the compound absorbs light/UV radiations and has reversible changes in its colour is called photochromism. Various kinds of dyes show photochromism effect such as spiropyrans, diarylethene, azobenzene, quinone etc., Spiropyrans are one of the oldest and perhaps the most studied families of photochromic dyes. Diarylethene class of photochromic compounds which are thermally irreversible and are fatigue resistant is of commercial importance. Photochromic complexes based on above mentioned dyes and metal are also used as photochromic compounds. Inorganic compounds like silver chloride, tungsten oxide(W03), etc. shows photochromic effect. Coordination compIex such as sodium nitroprusside and the ruthenium sulfoxide also shows photchromism. Photochromic compounds are used in various applications vz: sanglasses, supermolecular chemistry, solar energy, data storage and photochromic pigments. Photochromic dyes are encapsulated into polymer matrix to obtain photochromic pigment. Photochromic pigments are heat and solvent resistant. Same of these colorants have excellent weatherability and light fastness, and some others have quite poor light and chemical fastnesses. Photochromic pigments are used in plastics, paints, inks, etc. These are also used in novelty items Iike toy, cosmetics, clothing and industrial applications. These pigments are also used in combination with conventional oigments to getvarious colour effects. |
