The cooling air is assumed to originate from a dual orifice adjustable air-ring. The stream line pattern and heat flux are determined through a finite volume numerical technique using a version of the so called k-ε modeling. It is shown that as the air flows through the air ring passage relatively large under-pressure is created (Venturi effect), which applies a suction to the bubble. Depending on the flow rates and geometrical configurations the air jet may attach itself (Coanda effect) to either the air ring surface and/or to the bubble. The Coanda effect has a significant influence on local heat flux. The numerical results suggest that the Venturi and Coanda effects influence significantly process stability, production rate and final film properties. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Numerical simulation of turbulent airflow emerging from an Internal Bubble Cooling (IBC) stack and directly impinging on the internal surface of a blown film bubble has been carried out. The streamline pattern and heat flux are determined through a finite volume numerical technique using a version of k-M turbulence modeling. It is shown that balancing the airflow between the multiple slits of the stack is useful to increase the internal cooling rates, but may require more elaborate designs of the inlet pipe. As the air flows towards the internal bubble surface there is significant deceleration which diminishes the effectiveness of the heat removal mechanisms. Depending on the flow rates and geometrical configurations the airflow may induce compressibility effects at the exhaust pipe. The numerical results suggest that Internal bubble Cooling (IBC) equipment introduces distinctive design and operation challenges. Note de contenu : - Literature review

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : A numerical simulation of the heat transfer during laser transmission welding is presented. A finite difference approach was used to solve the one-dimensional unsteady-state heat conduction problem and to investigate the effect of welding conditions on the time-dependent temperature profiles for PA 6. For the needs of the simulation, the process was divided into heating and heat redistribution periods. The absorption coefficient of the laser-transparent part was measured experimentally and that of the laser-absorbing part was fitted using experimental data. The predicted temperature profiles were combined with experimental meltdown data to estimate the heat-affected zone thickness in the welded specimens. Good agreement was found between the estimated and measured heat-affected zone thickness values.
