Titanium dioxide is by far the most commonly produced white pigment. In addition to its extraordinary hiding power and excellent whitening properties, this transition metal oxide features other remarkable capabilities. Photochemical processes at the surface of titanium dioxide allow the decomposition of organic substances (photocatalysis) and can prevent drop formation on surfaces, as well as drastically facilitate the run-off of liquids from surfaces (photohydrophilicity). The crucial element in these phenomena is light energy, which aids titanium dioxide in providing radicals for the decomposition of unwanted substances, and in influencing the wetting properties of surfaces. While until recently, only the UV portion of sunlight could be used, with the proper doping of titanium dioxide a considerable portion of the visible light can now be also explored. This achievement has significantly widened the range of applications in which titanium dioxide photocatalysts can deploy their effect.Note de contenu : - Discovery and industial exploration
