Tannage Résumé : The biodegradability of typical organic tanning agents, including aromatic syntans, aldehydic tanning agents and acrylic tanning agents, were investigated. The results showed that the biodegradation behaviours of these leather chemicals are closely associated with their chemical structures, molecular weights and compositions. Therefore, different organic tanning agents might result in different environmental impacts even though they belong to the same type of tanning agent. The four aromatic syntans tested exhibited low biodegradability in general. Among them, a phenol-based syntan was not biodegradable and the phenol-sulphone based syntan produced a strong inhibitory effect on respiration of activated sludge. Comparatively, the naphthalene-based syntan was somewhat easier to biodegrade than other aromatic syntans. In the cases of aldehydic tanning agents, both formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde were not biodegradable and were toxic to organisms in activated sludge. Thus, they are potential inhibitors to biodegradation of other organic compounds in wastewater. However, an aliphatic aldehydic tanning agent was biodegradable and showed no toxicity to microorganisms in activated sludge. As for acrylic tanning agents, results indicated that commercial anionic products do not have any negative effect on biodegradation activity of activated sludge but they themselves were hardly biodegraded. Whereas, cationic acrylic tanning agents have the potential to inhibit the activated sludge process when presented at a high concentration. Note de contenu : - Biodegradability of aromatic syntans

Tannage Résumé : In recent years, there has been a growing focus on amphoteric retanning materials due to their crucial role in enhancing the electropositivity of retanned leather and improving the absorption of anionic dyes and fatliquors. This paper introduces a novel design and successful preparation of amphoteric retanning agents. Initially, a series of poly(N-vinylformamide-co-acrylic acid) copolymers were synthesized through a free radical copolymerization reaction initiated by azodiisobutyamidine hydrochloride. Subsequently, these polymers were hydrolyzed to produce an amphoteric retanning agent (A-PVAm) with a solid content of 15 %(Wt). Their structures were characterized using FT-IR, and their isoelectric points were determined through a zeta potential analyzer. Following this, a fluorescent tracer (FA-PVAm) was synthesized by reacting fluorescein 5-isothiocyanate with A-PVAm. This tracer was utilized to monitor the real-time penetration and mass transfer of A-PVAm during the retanning process as a signaling agent. The mass transfer of A-PVAm was observed concerning dosage and running time. It was observed that within 60 minutes, A-PVAm could evenly distribute throughout the leather. In instances where the retanning agent dosage was inadequate, the inner part of the crust showed minimal presence of the retanning agent. However, at dosages exceeding 20 %, the retanning agent exhibited uniform distribution within the leather. The utilization of the fluorescent tracing technique proved effective in creating a tracer to monitor the penetration of the amphoteric acrylic resin retanning agent in leather. This approach can assist in optimizing the molecule structure of the polyacrylate retanning agent and analyzing its mechanism of action. Produits de nourriture du cuirIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In the treatment of tannery wastewater, other chemical agents such as tannins and fatliquors may possibly have an influence on bio-decolourization of dyes, few researchers have addressed that problem. This paper reports how four kinds of commercial fatliquors influence the bio-decolourization of an azo dye (Acid Fuchsin 6B as the experimentat object) and expounds the mechanisms of these influence processes. it was obvious that the addition of sulfonated fatliquor and oxidized-sulfited fatliquor have improved the bio-decolourization activity of Acid Fuchsin 66, by contrary, the bio-decolourization of the dye has been stopped virtually by the addition of Lecithin based fatiguer and Phosphoric esters fatliquor. The paper used LC/MS to analyze and quantify metabolites of the dye in various substrates. The results certify that a stimulation of degradation products of these fatliquors on the breaking of the azo linkage contributes to the improvement of the bio-decolourization of the azo dye. And according to the correlation coefficient of the poly-?-hydroxybutyrate production with the residual concentrations of the dye, the inhibition of the fatliquors with phosphate groups on the bio-decolourization is directly due to the formation of the poly?-p-hydroxybutyrate.
