Résumé : |
Very high levels of titanium dioxide may be used in white flexo inks. This leads to 'crowding' and a loss of pigment efficiency. Seven different extenders were evaluated as partial replacement fo TiO2 marked differences in performance were observed and correlated with differences in appearance found by imaging procedures. |
Note de contenu : |
- Choosing the right extender
- Direct replacement of TiO2 offers cost savings
- How different extenders affect opacity
- Viewing the particle distribution within the inks
- How different extenders affect gloss
- Factors affecting extender choice reviewed
- TABLE : Basic properties of extenders evaluated in the exercise
- FIGURES : 1. 1a and b : Opacity and gloss with 5% and 10% VC ultrafine GCC levels (partial replacement of 34% VC TiO2) - 2a and B : Opacity and gloss in relation to increasing ultrafine kaolin level at 29% VC TiO2 - 3. Opacity (SCE Ry on black) for different inks containing various mineral extenders - 4. FIB section through and ink containing TiO2 but no extender - 5a-d : Visualisation of the partial replacement of TiO2 with various extenders using focused ion beam imaging - 6. Larger particle size extenders at high loading give and a higher micro-roughness - 7. 60% gloss of inks containing different extender types and loadings - 8a-f. Some impact of extenders on surface profile may be more apparent at different magnifications |
