But did you know that TiO2 is actually beneficial for reducing energy consumption and counteracting global warming? TiO2 can be put to work every day to improve the environment and significantly reduce our CO2 emissions. TiO2 pigments are used as intermediates in the production of paints and coatings and as such a 'cradle to gate' product carbon footprint is a common request from those who wish to calculate the footprint of their own products. A full product 'cradle to gate' carbon footprint number requires all feed-stocks and off-site inputs to be included in the calculation. An industry average product carbon footprint for 2012 has been calculated by the Titanium Dioxide Manufacturers Association (TDMA). The TDMA cradle to gate average value of 5.3 kg CO2e/kg will be used in all the following considerations as we argue purely on the technical merits of TiO2; its ability to mitigate its own carbon footprint and assist us in reducing our environmental impact.
