Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 677.4 Textiles artificiels Résumé : With their light weight and their high strenght values, carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) are promising materials for replacing steel panels in the machine building industry. These steel panels are many times heavier, but nevertheless they are currently state-of-the-art material. At the moment, the production of CFRP is nor optimized for obtaining a light-weight end product, but aimed at being in compliance with the - partly obsolete - standard specifications of aerospace engineering. This implies that, amongst other issues, the adhesion properties between fiber and matrix are not optimized. An optimization of the surface adhesion leads to further weight reduction of the CFRP, which will cause a further descent of energy consumption and hence a positive environmental impact - especially when the CFRP is used for traffic engineering applications. Reaching this "green goal" of energy savings by developing a "green process step" for its realization makes the research work even more rewarding. The approach which will be presented here is the activation of carbon fiber surfaces by a plasma process.
