Today mankind has become increasingly dependent on road transport for both commercial and personal use. A major shift from water and rail based transport to roads bas been seen in UK, Europe and other developed nations. From many centuries it has been a trend to construct the road by using bitumen which is a dark or black coloured (solid/semi solid/viscous) material. But the handling of bitumen at ambient temperature is very difficult since it is a highly viscous material. lt can, however be transformed into a workable state by blending with petroleum solvents, leads to the emission of VOC, which is harmful to environment. Bitumen is net cost effective due to the increased sensitivity of the material to temperature and adverse weather condition. The maintenance cost for bitumen construction is also high. So scientists have thought about cost effective and environmentally friendly solution for construction work & bitumen emulsion is one of the outcomes of their innovative thought.
This paper will discuss about Bitumen emulsions, its manufacturing techniques and their advantages over asphalt/bitumen in construction/pavementwork. |
