A secondary purpose is to maintain the aesthetic aspects and value of expensive good such as cars, trucks and aeroplanes. The cost of corrosion runs to approximately 3-4 % of GDP on an annual basis and therefore has an global economic impact of around US$3.3 billion. Styrene-acrylic dispersions with a low minimum filmformation temperature (MFFT) based on styrene and butyl acrylate monomers have made a good contribution to reduce the need for plasticisers or solvents for film formation, so that the finished paints meet EU volatile organic compound (VOC) emission standard - 2004/42/EC. While the approach has been accepted as the state of the art solution for many years, paint manufacturers are continuously searching for improvements to meet higher market requirements and ever-increasing regulatory standards. This mega trend is seen across ail industries globally, but is particularly visible for the automotive, chemical and manufacturing industries. Numerous new and revised regulations have been introduced to the chemical industry in different regions, including Europe, which has seen a number of revised regulations and reclassification of chemical substances, such as volatile organic compounds (V005), formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, titanium dioxide (T102) and several isothiazolinone limitations in the last two years.
2050 and form a more sustainable economy, with an action plan to boost the efficient use of resources by moving to a clean, circular economy and restore biodiversity and cut pollution. The European Commission expects all economy sectors to take action in investing in environmentally-friendly technologies, decarbonising the energy sector, supporting industry to innovate and ensuring buildings are more energy efficient. It is expected that there will be a renovation wave to modernise Europe's buildings, which presents a great opportunity to the paint and coatings industry. It is also expected that the other regions will put in similar efforts to drive for more sustainable growth and introduce various initiatives to improve the current environmental and climate situation. The UK, for example, has also recently announced its Green Homes Grant program to encourage home owners to make energy-saving improvements with financial support from the government.
With this trend in mind, Synthomer has developed a novel styrene acrylic binder with excellent water resistance, scrub resistance and hiding power, which potentially enables the paint and coatings industry to optimise binder and pigment dosage, resulting in paint property, carbon footprint and cost improvement. Formulations based on this new binder can also meet the 2018 criteria for the RAL UZ 102 label ("Blue Angel") in the category "Low Emission Interior Wall Paints' ln the following article, we detail our internai studies that enable the aforementioned savings by showing test resuits of paint formulations with a high pigment volume concentration (PVC) and within the gloss range of matt (<10 GU 85°) and dead matt (<5 GU 85°), which are popular in the DACH market (Germany, Austria and Switzerland). We will also elaborate resuits from formulations for mid-sheen gloss >10 GU 85° wall paint, often encountered in other European countries, such as France and UK. A market standard styrene acrylic polymer was used as benchmark in this study.Note de contenu : - Lower binder dosage : a gain in formulation cost, no compromise in performance
- Lower titanium dioxide (TiO2) content for lower cost and leaner carbon footprint
- Robust polymer design to fit a broad range of formulations
- Biocide concepts for interior wall paints in european markets
- Passing the volatile organic compound (VOC) requirements for RAL UZ 102 labelling
- A next generation polymer dispersion for a more sustainable future
