Résumé : |
Corrosion of metallic materials takes place via an electrochemical reaction at a specific corrosion rate along with non electrochemical process. Consequently, the life of a metallic rnaterial in a particular corrosive environment can be accurately predicted. This is not the case with non-metallic materials. Non-metallic materials may deteriorate in various ways and manners, but not by electrochemical corrosion process. Only metals corrode according to the accepted definition of corrosion used in general. Carbon and graphite for example satisfactorily resist most minerai and organic acids, aqueous solutions of alkalis, salts and organic compounds, and organic solvents at temperature up to the boiling points. Selective leaching takes place in graphite because graphite is cathodic to iron, and gray iron's structure develops an excellent galvanic cell. Similarly superheated water can deteriorate diamond. Yellowing of paper, deterioration of leather are the examples of deterioration of non-metals.
