Résumé : |
The author discuss the development of borosilicate based effect pigments.
Iridescent colours caused by light interference are well known in nature, such as in the colours of butterfly wings. For producing such interference effects on an industrial level naturel fish silver derive from fish silver derived fro fish scales was used in the beginning then succeeded by platelet shaped inorganic crystals (ie basic lead carbonate and bismuth oxychloride). Nowadays, pearlescent pigments based on natural mica represent by far the most important class of interference effect pigments. Those pigments consist of platelets coated with thin latyer of highly refractive metal oxide (eg TiO2) causing multiple reflection and interference oflight. Different colours can be created by variation of the thickness and material of the metal oxide layer. |
