Responsible formulators should use the best available guidelines and recommendations where the legislation is currently incomplete and these should be applied to each of the separate components of composite packaging materials. Migration data for food packaging should always be generated under realistic and practical conditions, by accepted analytical methods, as the nature of substrates, foodstuffs and converter operating conditions can be diverse. It is recommended that migration testing is conducted by an expert accredited laboratory. Examples of accredited laboratories with experience in testing UV/EB coated/printed food packaging can be found using the links in the box. It is ultimately the responsibility of the packaging designer, the printer/converter that manufactures the packaging and the distributor of the product to ensure that the packaging produced meets the requirements of the regulations. Advice and guidance on selection of appropriate materials for the end use of the packaging is readily available via trade associations and raw material manufacturers to help ensure compliance.
