This paper discusses APE-free emulsifying agents, designed to promote easy emulsification of long-oil alkyds using low shear mixing equipements.
In the traditional high gloss alkyd enamels, the conventional alkyd resins are dissolved in an organic solvent, such as mineral spirit. Due to health and environmental concerns there is an increasing interest in waterborne alkyd enamels. Oil-in-water emulsions of long-oil alkyd resins typically used in solventborne enamels are thereforean interesting alternative. Suitable emulsifying agents and special equipments which provide high-energy input are usually required to generate stable oil-in-water alkyd emulsions containing small particle size.
In this work APE-free emulsifying agents designed to promote easy emulsification of long-oil alikyds using conventional low shear stirring equipments and low emulsifier content will be presented.
The effects of temperature, shear rate, emulsifying agent composition and content on the emulsion inversion point (EIP), solid content and particle size will be explored.
Finally, gloss of waterborne and solventborne enamels will be compared. |
