Paints, inks and varnishes based on drying or semi drying alkyd resins and oils form a significant proportion of the total production of the surface coatings industry. Traditional metal complex driers/catalysts are calcium, cobalt and zirconium/lead amongst others. This article introduces the use of strontium as a direct alternative to zirconium or lead and as a potential replacement for calcium.
Lead driers have been shown to be toxic and as such their usage in coatings and inks has been restricted. Zirconium driers are recognised as the first real alternative to lead driers in coatings and inks anf for the most part the performance is acceptable. However, zirconium driers suffer loss of dry performance with time and there have been comments that the film hardness development is not as good. Overbased, high metal concentration strontium driers have been developed as non-toxic cost-effective alternatives to lead and zirconium. |
