The extruder is modelled as a plug flow type of reactor. Through the introduction of travel time for a fluid element in the extruder, time dependent viscosity models following from rheokinetics can be used. Special attention is paid to ionic and radical polymerization reactions. Hysteresis behavior for stationary values of the fully filled length exists when die resistance and rotational speed are varied. The effects of reaction rate, viscosity levels and degree-of-fill on stable operation at high conversions are studied. The mathematical dynamic model presented here can account for some of the experimentally observed dynamic phenomena in the reactive extrusion of radical polymers. The mixing enhancers are slotted screws and gear mixing elements. Particular attention has been directed to drag and pressure flow characteristics and residence time distribution in such devices. The data obtained are useful for guidance in the selection of appropriate mixing elements and validation of flow simulation models for twin screw extruders. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Since the past few decades, environmental issues have become a serious concern in society. It is a requisite for the industry tominimize waste, in order to protect the environment from being polluted. The term waste here comprises processing waste and post-consumer waste. The amount of processing waste should not be underestimated since it might consist of approximately 10% of the total production. The recycling of EPDM rubber is an interesting topic, especially if considered in connection with the continuous market growth of EPDM. This paper is a summary of efforts that have been taken so far on this subject. Studies done on EPDM recycling include reusing EPDM as filler in new rubber products and chemical, thermal, and mechanical devulcanization of EPDM in order to achieve a material that resembles the virgin one and could be revulcanized. Such studies on EPDM recycling are discussed extensively and in the conceptual frame of more general rubber recycling processes. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : The reactive extrusion of thermoplastic polyurethane in a corotating twin-screw extruder was investigated. The polyurethane system consisted of a mixture of 2,4-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (2,4-MDI) and 4,4-MDI, methyl-propane-diol and a polyester polyol. An engineering extrusion model was designed and compared with experimental results. In this validation study the catalyst level, throughput, rotation speed and the barrel wall temperature was varied. A comparison of the experiments with the model showed that the model captured the polyurethane extrusion fairly well. Furthermore, the effect of the depolymerization reaction on the polyurethanes extrusion was investigated. It was found that the extruder operation is gravely affected by the depolymerization reaction: the depolymerization reaction limits the maximal obtainable conversion, stabilizes the extruder operation, and causes undesired post-extrusion curing of the polyurethane.
