Transdermal drug delivery systems offer many advantages over conventional oral medications, largely because they deliver less medication to achieve the same therapeutic effect. Oral medications are absorbed in the gastrointestinal system, metabolized by the liver, and ultimately circulated by the bloodstream through the body. With any drug delivery system, the level of medication in the blood fluctuates, hitting both peaks and troughs. Using oral delivery, these peaks and troughs can be extreme, especially with frequent dosage regimens.
