Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and ethylene butyl acrylate (EBA) copolymers are considered the most versatile materials for these products, offering many benefits for an almost endless number of applications.
EVAs are commonly compounded with hydrocarbon, terpene- and rosin-derived tackifying resins, and waxes, since the EVA copolymer alone is not capable of meeting all requirements. Resins and waxes may be added to the polymer as a processing aid to improve flow by reducing the viscosity of the system to a level that allows good substrate wetting and fast application. In addition, resins decrease the yield point of the polymer, providing enhanced flexibility, higher hot tack, improved heat sealability and better specific adhesion.
The need for EVA copolymers to be modified with resins, as well as the great number of application and equipment variables, has given rise to the development of many different types of resin. Selecting the optimum resin out of the multitude of available grades is one of the most complicating and time consuming activities for the adhesive compounder. This article describes a fundamental and practical compatibility concept for the initial selection of resins in a variety of polymers.Note de contenu : - COMPATIBILITY
