The theoretically predicted inverse relationship of filler particle size to viscosity and structure build was observed. The impact of particle size on sealant bulk viscosity is most noticeable when comparing particles that differ by at least one order of magnitude in size. In the colloidal particle size region (<0.2 µm), sealant bulk viscosity is not particularly sensitive to small differences in coated PCC particle size because of the combined effects of functional filler particle distribution. Conversely, sealant structure build and sag resistance that results from thixotropic flow behaviour is very responsive to even the smallest differences in particle size. Particle size influence is unaffected by particle size distribution effects or ratio of functional filler to extender filler. PCC particle size must be in the colloidal region to impart non-sag properties.
Surface treatment composition has a significant impact on sealant rheology. Surface treatments can be specific in their effectiveness with a certain polymer. The selection of surface treatment based on its compatibility of affinity with certain sealant polymers can compensate for a larger particle size. Functional PCC fillers can be developed to impart response specific to the target polymer system or sealant type by the resourceful selection of surface treatment and particle size.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Filler characterization - Sealant formulations - Test procedures
