Perhaps two decades further out will find them as equally important as they are today. A few of the future needs :
- nano-region particles for toughening thermoset resins, achieved in the development of the multiphase adhesives mass morphology, ostensibly allowing greater transfer of toughness from neat to highly filled systems ;
- peeling strengh improvement in high-temperature adhesives (presently inadequate at both operating temperatures and high load rates) ;
- more than marginal improvements in strength and toughness, particularly under tensile and shear loads ;
- a major leap forward in service life of bonded assemblies for severe environments and in modeling/gauging their predictions ;
- more raw materials designed for the structural adhesives formulator ; and

Résistance à la ruptureIndex. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : Most aspects of structural adhesives technology in this review began at/or before the initial period of the last two decades. While little is generally new, there exists a host of specific advances that define the broad synergism extant in structural adhesives science and technology today.There is no universally accepted definition for a structural (or engineering) adhesive. Those that exist usually imply a hardened or cured adhesive mass (chain-extended and crosslinked), multiphase by design, which provides a relatively high-modulus, high-strength adhesive. This adhesive, in turn, can tolerate degrees of load under various durability regimes. Use of structural adhesives in bonding practice provides lightweight, strong and stiff structures in the joining of numerous substrates. Important bonded assembly features are dynamic fatigue resistance, high peel resistance, design flexibility, neat appearance (compared to welding), improved corrosion resistance and cost-effective assembling.While some problems still exist, aggregate knowledge of the past two decades has served to enhance immensely a faith or trust in structural adhesives use. Thus, the major achievement of the last two decades has been the bringing together (tethering) of quite different disciplines to develop the vastly improved structural adhesive products in the marketplace today. Various aspects of these disciplines will be touched upon in this two-part review. Updated profiles of structural adhesive products will also be featured. Note de contenu : - Surface science
