Introduced in the late 1960s, these polymers eventually grew to a market of more than 100 million lb annually worldwide. Butadiene-based (SBS) polymers also were found to be useful in adhesives; they claim an annual market of more than 50 million lb.
In the early 1970s, a saturated version of SBS, styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS), was introduced. This block copolymer made possible a longer useful life for products made from it, compared to products made from SBS or SIS. The single carbon-carbon bonds in the elastomeric block of SEBS were relatively unreactive, therefore more stable in the presence of air (oxygen), sunlight, heat and mechanical energy imposed on the polymer. The SEBS network also was stronger than that of unsaturated counterparts. Unfortunately, the nonpolar nature of SEBS meant that it was less likely to adhere to polar substrates than the unsaturated SIS and SBS polymers. It was more difficult to soften and tackify the harder, more viscous SEBS polymer.Note de contenu : - Development of predominantly satured, tacky, block copolymers
- Chemically bonded isoprene polymer compared to physical blend
- Low polymer content formulations
- Effect of molecular weight
