Titre : Unfolding new gateways for surface coatings development using nanotechnology Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : B. P. Mallik, Auteur Année de publication : 2005 Article en page(s) : p. 89-102 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Ever since the first article on molecular nanotechnology, that K. Eric Drexler published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA in 1981, nanotechnology has received wide attention among the scientific fraternity due to its immense potential in altering material properties and creating unique materials by inducing smart functionalities. This youngest discipline of science has become the hottest field of research during the last decade and succeeded in proliferating its wings in all major industries for numerous exciting commercial applications.
The recent advancement of Nanotechnology that design materials from the bottom up, has unleashed fascinating possibilities not only in the high end applicatio areas such as mimic of protein, drug delivery, quantum dots, fuel cells etc but also in the fields of coatings, polymer composites, adhesive, textiles, cosmetics, electronics etc. The possibilities are so wide that one simply needs to identify where to fit it and how to master the art of incorporating these particles for deriving technological benefits.
In the context of coatings nanotechnology has opened up a novel gateway in front of coatings researchers with immense possibilities for new generation coatings developments which are claimed to have exhibited spectacular improvement in property enhancement by several orders of magnitude even in thinner layer. This article will briefly discuss the limitations of existing approach in providing solutions to commonly encountered coating problems experienced in the coating industry and at the same time how nanotechnology or the materials prepared via this converging route of technology (nanomaterials) could potentially be introduced to address these key problems successfully. The possible opportunities with specific examples and potential areas of application have been reviewed. Also the challenges and hurdles involved in adapting this technology and its future outlook have been discussed.Note de contenu : - NANOTECHNOLOGY - AN ANSWER ?

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The predominant functions of coatings in most practical applications are that they act as barriers to protect a material against mechanical or corrosive damage or to improve its outer appearance. However, recently there are also applications emerging, in which coatings not only act as a barrier against a hostile environment, but also play a more active role in controlling the interaction of a material with its surrounding. Examples are bioresponsive/biocompatible coatings, coatings for specific optical and medical applications, coatings which control the adhesion of biological cells or act as lubricants, and smart coatings, which can adapt to their environment. Such high-tech applications, however, are more demanding and require the deposition of coatings with strong adhesion to the substrate, well-defined chemical architectures and tailor-made properties. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Due to increasing stringency in environmental regulations, there is lot of pressure on coating manufacturers to reduce VOC's of coatings. Waterbased coating technology is regarded as the technology to fulfill this requirement. However the inferior performance of conventional waterbased technologies has been a major roadblock in the acceptance of these products in the furniture and industrial wood coating segment. The recent advances made in waterbased coating technology has resulted in the extensive development of coatings based on polyurethane dispersions, alkyd emulsions, 2 pack polyurethane dispersions and UV curable dispersions, which are reducing the gap between performance of water based and solvent based coatings. These coatings have opened up new avenues for their usage in the wood coating segment. Le second groupe en importance de matériaux en silicone est celui des résines de silicone, formées par des oligosiloxanes ramifiés ou en forme de cage (wiki).Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : One of the more intriguing developments in protective coatings technology during the 1990s, has been the creation of a new generic class of high performance resins based on siloxane chemistry. Organic coatings degrade as a result of thermal oxidation, photo-initiated oxiation or by chemical attack. Polysiloxane network composition provides significantly enhance thermal and chemical resistance properties as well as offering extended weatherability and appearance retention. Recent advances in siloxane chemistry and formulation technology have led to the development of ambient temperature curable polyxiloxane coating systems with significant advantages compared to traditional inorganic and organic coatings.
This paper discusses the various polysiloxane topcoats as well as "hybrid systems in which properties of a traditional organic resin have been selectively and significantly upgraded.Note de contenu : - COMPARATIVE PROPERTIES OF SILICONE AND ORGANIC COATINGS : Terminology
