More recently, two-component adhesives based on polychloroprene latices have become widely used for bonding polyurethane foam to itself in the manufacture of seating.
Polychloroprene latices have not widely replaced solvent-based contact cements in bonding high-pressure laminate to particleboard because of several performance and application issues. It rakes a waterborne adhesive much longer to dry at ambient conditions than a solvent-based adhesive. Quick drying of a latex-based system can only be achieved by an investment in drying equipment.
The contact bond properties of polychloroprene latices are not as good as solvent-based polychloroprene adhesives in several respects. The difference in auto-adhesion properties gives lower initial bond strength and makes bonding at low pressures difficult.
Also, the heat resistance of adhesives based on polychloroprene latices is generally lower than solvent-based contact cements because of the presence of surface active ingredients used to emulsify the latex, tackifiers and other compounding ingredients.
This article presents two new polychloroprene latices that provide additional possibilities for formulating waterborne contact adhesives with good rack and heat resistance properties. By utilizing these latices in combination with other latices, formulations were developed that had improved initial peel strength and softening points.Note de contenu : - Polymerization
