These epoxy resin-RLP hybrid systems are widely used in adhesives and materials, providing increased impact resistance and peel strength, resulting in improved durability under cyclic loading conditions and temperature variations. Improving the toughness of thermoset materials such as epoxy resins, phenolic resins, acrylic resins and vinyl esters is often a necessary step in the development of viable high-performance adhesives and materials for the more critical applications. The tough and durable aerospace film adhesives, composed of either toughened phenolic or epoxy resins, have made it possible to manufacture lighter bonded structures that are as strong or stronger than their heavier-riveted counterparts. In this article, we will briefly discuss the history of toughening; the criteria for preparing materials ans adhesives with optimum toughness and the development and use of reactive liquid polymers as tougheners for epoxy resins.
