There is a challenge for syntans to be processed without formaldehyde to meet strict regulations in the leather goods and chemicals arena. ln the present study, formaldehyde-free melamine based retanning has been developed using glyoxal as a condensing agent and sodium sulfamate as a sulfonating agent. Sulfonated glyoxylated melamine-based resins were prepared using different mole ratios of melamine, sodium sulfamate and glyoxal.
The sodium sulfamate to melamine mole ratio (SS/M) was varied from 0.5 to 3.0 and glyoxal to melamine mole ratio (GIM) was varied from 2 to 6. Fluidity and gelling behaviour of resinous solutions were evaluated with the increasing trend of sulfonation and with increasing mole ratio of glyoxal to melamine.
Stabilized resins were applied comparatively as retanning agents on chrome-tanned goatskins against a conventional formaldehyde based melamine resin. Comparative tear strengths, tensile strengths, elongation at break and scanning electron micrographs of glyoxylated melamine and formaldehyde-based melamine-retanned leathers were studied and better performance was found in glyoxylated melamine-tanned leathers. The resin with optimum performance was structurally elucidated by FTIR.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Chemicals and apparatus - Preparation of sulfonated melamine glyoxylated resin

ViscositéIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Fatliquors are involved in leather making process to separate fibres of leather from each other and impart soft hand feeling. Fatliquors are chemically modifications of vegetable and animal oils. Castor oil is suitable as a basic raw material for the preparation of fatliquor due to hydroxyl functionality on ricinoleic acid. In this paper, castor ail based synthetic fatliquors were synthesised by two step processes. In a first step castor oil is condensed with maleic anhydride at varying mole ratio from 1 to 3. In the second step castor maleic adduct was sulphited with sodium metabisulphite at varying mole ratios from zero to 1.5. Solubility behaviour with viscosity changes were observed at différent mole ratios of reactants. Structural changes in synthetic fatliquors were studied by FTIR spectroscopy.
Fatliquoring properties at the stabilised fatliquors were comparatively evaluated on goat crust leather. Comparative analysis at leather softness, lear and tensile strengths, elongation at break, light fastness and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the fatliquored feathers were studied and comparatively better results were found in leather using the synthetic fatliquor which was synthesised at optimal conditions of castor ail to maleic anhydride mole ratio of 1:1.5 and further sulphitation of the castor maleic adduct with sodium metabisulphite at a mole ratio of 1.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES : Chemicals - Apparatus - Preparation of sulphited castor maleic condensate based synthetic fatliquor

ViscositéIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Sulfonated amino resins like urea and melamine formaldehyde resins are widely used in retanning of leather. Both urea and melamine formaldehyde resins show free formaldehyde contents in the retanned leather greater than permissible limits Oppm). In this research sulfonated isophthalic dihydrazide formaldehyde condensates have been prepared through controlled reaction of isophthalic dihydrazide with formaldehyde and sodium metabisulfite under different reactant conditions to optimize the free formaldehyde content in retanned leather within permissible limits. The retanning behaviours of these resin have been investigated. Tear strength, tensile strength, elongation at break and morphology of grain and cross section of fibre through scanning electron microscopy of the retanned leather has been studied. TGA was performed to evaluate the thermal stability of the resin. Structural elucidation of the optimized resin was characterized by FTIR.
