Pipelines that operate at high temperatures greater than 1200C require new coating materials for Protection. Developing products in meeting the end use application requirements requires new chemistry than the existing FBE which has a Tg of < 110 OC. It also requires the development of new test methods. This paper illustrates coating requirements and existing test procedures applicable to high temperature coatings. It also provides test data and results from example candidate coatings for high operating temperature pipelines. A high temperature Fusion Bonded Epoxy based on Brominated Epoxy Resin was developed for high temperature Pipeline operation suitable for up to 130 OC.The coating performs significantly better in Cathodic disbondment and water soak tests than conventional FBE coatings. Crude oil available at shallow depths are depleting and hence Oil well operations are going deeper. Discoveries indicate that Crude oil from Deeper drilling operations, yield very high temperature crude oils. Down hole pipelines need to have corrosion protection coating which is stable at service temperatures of 120 OC and above. Similarly, at some locations, Natural Gas production points, requires high temperature pipelines. In some cases, crude oil is solid at ambient temperature, due to very high wax content and pipelines must be heated to liquefy the waxy crude oil and transport through pipeline. |
