The main objective of this article is to describe some of the important aspects related to the solvent free epoxy based protective coatings for anticorrosive applications. The paper aims to provide a brief introduction of solvent free coatings technology with advantages, performance properties and applications thereof. International and national regulatory bodies and governments are aiming to reduce the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These challenges have caused significant changes in the anticorrosive coating industry and given a new direction to research and development (R&D) in the coatings technology field. The type of binder ensures a number of properties like chemical resistance, flexibility, abrasion resistance in performance properties while designing solvent free coating may require considerations of good rheological properties for processing and ease of applications. Few important performance properties for longer durable coatings are adhesion to the metal,cohesive force within the coating, high mechanical strength, low permeability, good chemical resistance and corrosion resistance etc. These properties are based on type of binders, ingredients and active materials used to form the cured coating film. In this article, the performance test of solvent free anticorrosive epoxy coatings and standards for determination of the performance and durability have been discussed. Also, major applications of solvent free epoxy coatings have been explained at the end. |
