Nature has inspired scientists to create hydrophilic and hydrophobie paint surfaces. Considerable efforts have been made over the last few decades for developing self-cleaning surfaces exhibiting high contact angles for both polar and non-polar liquids. Self-cleaning coatings are becoming a requirement as integral part of our daily life because of their utility in various applications. Self-cleaning coatings are applied to maintain interior and exterior hygiene of the building structure and also in many automotive appliances.
This paper is regarding various approaches in self-cleaning coatings like superhydrophilicity, superhydrophobicity and Omniphobicity. Nano TiO2 chemically breaks down organic dirt, adsorbed onto the surface. Dirt can be washed with water sheets due to superhydrophilicity. Superhydrophilicity is required for uniform cleaning of the surfaces. White superhydrophobic coatings impart water beading due to high contact angle which in tum keep surface clean. Omni phobie (omni: all ; phobie: repellent) due to very low surface tension value and surface morphology repel almost all types of liquids from paint surface. A broad range of applications of omniphobic coatings are : in Decorative & automotive field, permaclean cloths, anti-icing coatings for metals etc. |
