One must add materials to stabilize the colloidal components against coagulation or settling. There are three classes of stabilizers - dispersants, surfactants and protective colloids. In addition, salts in the formulations add to the colloidal stability to some degree. Defoamers are related species and are also discussed. Each are described with tips for improving performance. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Polyurethane coatings have been evolving over the years to meet increasingly more stringent performance requirements. To this end, a number of higher molecular weight polyols as well as isocyanates and isocyanate prepolymers have been developed. Significant levels of organic solvents are required in order to facilitate the application of high perfomance polyurethane coatings prepared from these constituents. With environmental legislation now requiring substantial reduction in coating VOC levels, the polyurethane industry is being forced to either reconsider lower molecular weight components which sacrifice coating performance or to consider new emerging chemistries. Reactive diluents reduce coating viscosity, thereby lowering organic solvent demand, and react into the polyurethane matrix to fill this market need. New research on the concepts, chemistry and performance of reactive diluents for polyurethane coatings is discussed. Note de contenu : - Reactive diluents

Titre : Radiation curable powder coatings Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Frank M. Witte, Auteur Année de publication : 1996 Article en page(s) : p. 115-117 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A powder coating system has been developed that can be cured by UV-radiation. This system is based on a fumaric or maleic unsaturated polyester and a vinyl ether functional polyurethane. The system is especially suitable for application on wood and plastics. Conventional thermally curing powder coating systems can not be used for wood applications because the coated materials can not resist high cure temperatures. One of the biggest advantages of the radiation curable powder coating technology is that flow (promoted by heat) and cure (by UV-radiation) are independent processes, resulting in coatings with smooth surfaces. The coating based on this UV system exhibits good flow, hardness, adhesion and sandability. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The mechanism of photodegradation and a new evaluation method in the weathering test on PVdF (polyvinylidene fluoride) / PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) resin paint films were studied. ESR spectrometer was used to determine radical species and their spin numbers generated in the films by UV-irradiation. Radicals generated at room temperature were identified as-CH2C(COOCH3)CH3 on the basis of the g-value and the hyperfine structure. It was found that the greater the fraction of PMMA in the film was, the higher the spin number became. The spin number was also influenced by the atmosphere in ESR measurement. The spin number increased rapidly and attained to the nearly constant value in N2. In the air or O2, on the other hand, it decreased after gained a maximum value. Hydrogen radicals were also found in the film by the UV-irradiation at -196°C. From these results, the mechanism of the photodegradation of the paint film was assumed that the main chain of C-C bonds of PMMA was broken to produce MMA. radials, followed by addition of oxygen to the radicals. Also, the fewer spin number and higher gloss retention were found on the film with higher fraction of PVdF. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A new fluoropolymer emulsion has been studied, which exhibits excellent weather resistance and reduces solvent emission. As a result of the introduction of a vinyl ether type macromonomer with a hydrophilic long chain, fluoroethylene and vinyl ethers could be stably copolymerized in water without hydrophilic cosolvent and this copolymer has an alternating sequence. Moreover, by optimizing emulsifier and polymerization conditions, an emulsion possessing high non volatile matter content (50 % by weight), suitable average particle diameter (0.15 μm) and mechanical/chemical stability for pigmentation, has been achieved. It can be used for preparation of architectural paint in a similar manner as conventional acrylic emulsions. The fluoro-emulsion film retains more than 90 % of its initial gloss after sunshine weather-o-meter exposure for 5,000 hours. In this paper the typical properties of this fluoropolymer emulsion (e.g. polymer structure, emulsion properties and application examples) are reported.
