Résumé : |
Fundamental research coupled with insights into new user needs is having a major effect on the development of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibers for a broad range of applications in sectors as far apart as personnel security, deep-sea exploration, and yacht racing. Fibers made from ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, or UHMWPE, have been available commercially for more than 35 years. But it is only quite recently that DSM Dyneema B.V., Urmond/Netherlands, which has a major stake in the global market in UHMWPE fibers and has upstream capability in polymer production has upped the ante with the development of variants of its Dyneema fiber aimed at specific applications. This article covers 3 variants that have been commercialized in the recent past : very high strength, high modulus fiber for ballistic protection, very low creep fiber for offshore production platform permanent mooring ropes and very high cut resistant fiber for comfortable protective gloves. |
