As resilient as the human body is, there are occasions when disease, injury, and malfunctions of the genetic code create the need for prosthetic or augmenting devices. To fill this need, devices have been constructed of platn materials, metals, plastics, ceramics, and human and animal tissues. In most cases these experiments have resulted in malfunctions or rejection. Even in cases where the device functions, it never becomes assimilated by the body.
The development of purification procedures and fabrication processes for collagen may result in a dramatic change in the previously existing problems. Purified collagen has proved itself to be well tolerated by the body, and devices constructed if this material seem to be actually incorporated into body structures. Recent clinical results predict an excinting future for this excellent biomaterial. |
