Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : This study examines the rheological and morphological properties of dynamically vulcanized nanocomposite thermoplastic elastomers (TPV nanocomposites) based on PP/EPDM. Rubber contents of 20, 40, and 60 % were used with polypropylene of different viscosities at 2wt.% of nanoclay. We performed rheological and morphological characterizations on the nanocomposites using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and rheometry in small amplitude oscillatory shear. The effects of polypropylene viscosity, maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PPMA), and composition were also investigated. The storage modulus (G') of the TPV nanocomposites (without PPMA) containing 20, 40, and 60 % rubber significantly increased in comparison with similar but unfilled samples and also a further increase in the G0 from the incorporation of the PPMA in the samples. The agglomeration of the clay considerably decreased when the rubber content was increased in the TPV nanocomposites. The yield stress of the prepared TPV nanocomposite, based on a low-viscosity PP, increased more than that of the sample from high viscosity PP. The TPV nanocomposites containing 20, 40 and 60 % EPDM exhibited a strong elastic modulus that tended to level off (plateau) at low shear rates. These results were attributed to strong interfacial interactions between the nanoclay and TPV matrix and, also, the existence of the physical three-dimensional network structure formed between the cured rubber particles, as evidenced by the morphological features of the samples. A Carreau-Yasuda law with yield stress and a linear viscoelastic model, taking into account the maximum packing volume (Phi m) were used to describe the melt linear viscoelastic properties of the TPV nanocomposites. The effect of organo-modified layered nanosilicates and composition on the cure characteristics, microstructure, mechanical, and rheological properties of the nanocomposites were studied. Results suggested the intercalation of polymer chains into the silicate layers which was evidenced by d-spacing results of X-ray diffraction patterns. TEM micrographs also directly confirmed XRD results. Mechanical properties of the nanocomposites depicted a nearly 40% percents increase respectively in the tensile modulus of 75NR/25EPDM containing 7 wt.% nanoclay. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Effects of organoclay contents on the startup flow properties of layered nano-scale particles in the simple shear mode are investigated. The addition of small amounts of nanoclays to polypropylene melts was found to dramatically change the flow characteristics and creates stress overshoots at large shear rates. A rheological model, initially developed for studying the motion of a group of symmetric ellipsoid particles in viscoelastic fluids was used to describe the orientation state of the uniformly dispersed suspensions of layered silicate in polypropylene melts. The effects of shear, particle loadings, particle interactions, flow reversal and rest time after cession of shear are studied and discussed according to our experimental observations and model predictions. It is shown that another diffusion term in the governing equation for the particles can be used to predict the properties by applying the rest time which was found to change the orientation of particles and shifts it to more isotropic microstructures. The experimental results of the startup viscosity are reasonably well predicted by the model at the three shear rates tested. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : The offline Microstructure of nanocomposites based on Poly-Propylene (PP), Ethylene-Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) and Cloisite 15A along the twin screw extruder barrel was investigated by X-Ray diffraction, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and rheological measurements. To assess the effect of screw zones, the microstructural development of nanocomposites along the screw was investigated. Accordingly, dead-stop experiment samples were taken at four different positions of the extruder after abruptly stopping the machine and opening the barrel. Effect of clay loading on the evolution of morphology in the extruder was studied. X-Ray diffraction results showed that at lower clay contents (up to~ 7 wt.%), the intercalation process is independent of screw geometry and accomplishes as soon as the matrix is melted; and on the other hand, excessive melt mixing of the samples containing higher clay loadings (10 wt.%) might lead to the collapse of silicate layers and consequently poor degrees of intercalation/exfoliation. Results were confirmed by TEM micrographs and also XRD patterns of the nanocomposites sensitively detecting the microstructural changes of the samples. The effect of GNs, graphene oxide (GOSs) and graphene oxide functionalized with PP chains (PP-g-GOSs) on various blend properties were investigated. Wide X-ray diffraction (WAXD) patterns and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of the prepared nanocomposites revealed that the nanofillers were mostly dispersed into the PP phase and the dispersion state of GNs was improved with functionalization of graphene. SEM photomicrographs indicated that rubber droplets were distributed in the PP phase and a reduction of the dispersed EPDM droplet size was observed most likely due to increase in the viscosity of the PP-phase during melt mixing. The effects of nanofillers on thermal, mechanical and rheological properties were reported, and the obtained results were discussed in terms of morphology, state of dispersion and distribution of the nanofillers within the PP matrix. As for the mechanical properties, an improvement of 56% in tensile modulus and 48% in tensile strength, while 72% reduction in elongation at break was observed. The DMTA results revealed that the nanocomposites based on PP-g-GOSs had lower damping behavior and the intensity of the loss factor decreased by increasing the GNs content. These results indicate the presence of a strong interfacial interaction between the nanoplatelets and the polymer matrix.
