Resins are extremely important materials in the production of a vast array of commercial and industrial applications. Epoxy composites offer even greater performance as their properties can be altered and improved to best suit the end stage application.
For endurance materials, graphene provides significant mechanical reinforcement, facilitating the manufacture of strong, lightweight and low cost composites. It also has considerable potential in the manufacture of advanced surface coatings and paints, which can be used to preserve and monitor the integrity of structures and vehicles. The key to achieving optimal performance is in obtaining homogeneous dispersion of the graphene particles within the host material. By utilising the low temperature plasma process, it is possible to overcome the limitations Imposed by the inert nature of graphene and achieve uniform particle dispersion.
By combining the beneficial properties of both graphene and epoxy resins it is possible to manufacture high performance materials that demonstrate unrivalled mechanical properties. These superior composites cannot only physically outperform existing materials, they also have the advantage of being highly cost effective to produce. Use of the low temperature plasma process provides additional benefits by further reducing processing costs, as well as eliminating the waste stream associated with other techniques, thereby opening a route to the sustainable production of high performance materials. |
