This method is also known as a hot embossing lithography due to its inherited process technique from the compression process. It is important to determine the appropriate conditions of pressure, temperature, and time in the nanoimprint lithography process. To determine the right conditions for nanoimprint lithography, one has to understand the polymer flow behavior during the imprinting process. In this study, a simplified analytical model was developed based on a power-law fluid to predict the polymer flow during the imprinting process. Under a constant imprint force, the imprint depth on a polymer film can be predicted using this model. Experimental tests were also conducted to verify the results. It was demonstrated that the model can provide reasonable results on the imprint depth. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Nanoimprint lithography has attracted broad interest as a low cost method to define nanometer scale patterns in recent years. In the cooling stage of the nanoimprint lithography process, the polymer resist is constrained inside the tool. As the temperature decreases, the polymer may shrink away from the tool. However, due to the constraint of the tool, thermal stresses may be induced in the polymer while the relaxation effect tends to release the build up of the stress level at the same time. In this study, a visco-elastic model was developed to analyze the stress variations of the imprinted patterns during the cooling process. Most of the residual stress is found to concentrate on the interface between the polymer resist and the substrate. Also, some stress concentration areas are observed near the adjacent of the large un-patterned area and the pillar. Thermal stress above the glass transition point is demonstrated to be able to relax during the cooling process. Most of the residual stresses are induced at the cooling stage with a temperature lower than the glass transition point. The effects of molding conditions on the filling of the polymer melt into the negative features were experimentally studied. A parametric study of the effect of the molding conditions on the filling of microstructure in micro molding was conducted. Increase of the mold temperature or injection rate is an effective method to ensure the complete filling of the microstructure. The application of packing pressure was shown to improve the filling in the microstructure also. With the low aspect ratio used in this study (about 0.2), the microdot array can be completely filled with the right selections of injection rate and mold temperature without vacuum. In the injection molding process, a complete filling of the micro or nano structures is necessary to fabricate a successful product. However, it is difficult to fully fill nano structures with an aspect ratio close to one or higher by the conventional molding process. In this study, mold inserts with nano channels were constructed by a LIGA-like process. The effects of the processing parameters and infrared heating on the filling of the nano structures were explored experimentally. Increasing the mold temperature, pressure, or filling rate did not improve the filling distance in nano channels with the conventional molding process significantly. Thus, an infrared mold surface heating system was introduced to assist the molding of the nano structures. To enhance the heating efficiency and reduce the cycle time, a heat-resistant layer was inserted under the mold cavity. The heat resistant plate led the heating system to work more efficiently. It easily increased the surface temperature over the glass transition temperature of plastic, thus fully filling the nano structures. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Injection compression molding is a process that modifies the original injection molding process to have a compression stage after the injection. This process is suitable for precision injection molding parts. The success of an injection compression molding process relies on proper design of the mold and selection of process conditions. The main scope of this study is to develop a process simulation tool for the injection compression molding process. The simulation tool is used to predict the state variations of the material during the molding, including molding flow, distributions of temperature and pressure, and the material shrinkage. The effect of the compression action on the molding part was investigated by this study. The compression action can provide more uniform packing on the mold cavity. But, with the non-uniform cooling, material can have different fluidity in the cavity, which induces pressure gradients during the compression action. From the simulation results, it is demonstrated that a two-stage compression action in the injection compression molding process can reduce the pressure gradient in the cavity and still have low shrinkage. By using this method, products with higher precision and lower warpage can be molded.
