Essential features of a free radical photoinitiator system include the efficient absorption of radiant energy and the efficient conversion of the absorbed radiation into excited states which yield radicals. It is also important that the radicals produced are efficient initiators of polymerisation and that the system is thermally stable, non toxic and does not yield toxic photoproducts. The efficient absorption of energy becomes a particular problem when pigmented systems have to be cured. Titanium dioxide is a frequently used white pigment. It exhibits a band edge at 380nm. When this pigment is used, it is desirable to emply initiator systems which exhibit at least some absorption beyond 380nm. Black pigments pose particular problems since they possess very few optical windows which can be used to photoexcite initiators |
