These early coatings rapidly gained a deserved reputation for improved chip and corrosion resistance compared with the conventional wet paints they superseded. This high performance is achieved through a combination of higher film build and increased crosslink density. Powder coatings also have application plant, thereby reducing waste ans losses (as low as 1%).
In the early 1970's, typical applications of powder coatings included exterior trim such as bumpers, door mirrors and windshield wiper arms. Traditionally, powder coatings have been employed as low gloss black, or dark grey, coatings as a contrast styling feature. As their performance benefits became more widely recognised, powder coatings increased their penetration into the components market to include functional as well as decorative applications.
With the recent developpments in terms of the surface appearance and exterior weathering durability, powder coatings are generating considerable interest in the automotive body finishing market, both as a clear coat and primer surfacer. The primer surfacer route is the more significantly developed of the two applications with several plants operating worldwide.
Powder coating is also being evaluated as a clear topcoat system, most signicantly by the Low Emission Paint Consortium (LEPC) in the North America and BMW Europe.
The increase in the interest in powder coatings has two main drivers. the first is that powder coatings technology can now meet the most stringent performance requirements, in terms of exteriror weathering resistance and visual apperance. The second and more significant one is the pressure from environmental legislation to reduce solvent emissions.Note de contenu : - Environmental issues
