The frequent occurrence of fire accidents across the country in recent years, causing heavy property losses and loss of human life are shocking. Therefore the development of a good flame retardant resin is required. The original fire retardant polyester resin formulation incorporated bromine and chlorine into the polymer. The disadvantages to these formulations were excessive toxic products and smoke given off on exposure to flame. Alumina trihydrate has successfully been added to non-halogenated polyester resin to resolve the toxicity and smoke issues. Most of the fire retardant coatings lose their effectiveness as fire resistant because of reduced char formation. Nano sized layered double hydroxides (LDH) can improve the properties of fire retardant coatings. Also, nano cement has the potential to create a new paradigm in this area of application. |
