Résumé : |
Stress corrosion is a form of corrosion that takes place in metal resulting from the conjoint action of stress and chemical. It is abbreviated as SCC. It is a phenomenon associated with a combination of static tensile stress, environment, and a metal metalIurgical condition which leads to component failure due to the initiation and propagation of a high aspect ratio crack. It is characterized by fine cracks (Figure-1), which lead to failure of potential components of the structure concerned. The SCC is an insidious form of corrosion ; it produces a marked loss of mechanical strength with little metal loss. The damage is not obvious to casual inspection and the stress corrosion cracks can trigger mechanical fracture and catastrophic failure of components and structures. Caustic cracking and hydrogen embrittlements are also the specific type of stress corrosion cracking. The failures are more often sudden and unpredictable which may occur after as I ittle as few months to years of previously satisfactory service. Several major disasters have involved stress corrosion cracking, including the rupture of high-pressure gas transmission pipes, the explosion of boliers, and the destruction of power stations and oil refineries. |
