The adhesion and elongation properties of cured coatings on sheet metal can be assessed by bending coated test panels over mandrels. These properties are important in assessing the performance of paints in applications where the coated metal will be formed after the coating has been applied. To perform satisfactorily in other particular applications, the coating must also possess the appropriate flexibility and toughness to withstand cracking when subjected to stresses produced by shrinking or swelling, mechanical abuse and weathering.
The ability of a coating material to be bent or flexed without cracking or exhibiting other forms of failure is known as flexibility and toughness is the strength and resilience of the coating to withstand great strains imposed in a short time period without tearing, breaking or rupture. Flexibility is tested using bend tests, whereas toughness is assessed using impact testers.
The flexibility of a coating applied to a substrate depends not only on its ability to expand as a result of pressure from within the film, distensibility but also on the coating thickness and on the adhesion between the coating and the substrate.
There are standards in both the ISO and ASTM systems that describe mandrel bend testing and there are two main types of mandrel bend test, the cylindrical mandrel bend test and the conical mandrel bend test. |
