The primary focus is rather the theme that the business of science is to show that the impossible is not ; the business of technology is to make it commonplace and to consider the future of yesterday's impossibilities. Revêtements -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The field of coating 'additives' is a broad one, and any attempt to review additives in general is likely to be both lengthy and unproductive. Instead, I have sought to draw attention to recently introduced additives that offer 'something more' - whatever that something may be. That, I hope, serves both to highlight the progress of coatings technology and to offer formulators both some new 'answers' to their problems' and some 'answers in search of a problem to solve'. Web addresses for the companies mentioned below are summarised in Table 1 as some are not immediately obvious. Note de contenu : - Wetting and dispersion
- Adressing concerns over cobalt
- Tough at the top : improving resistance properties : Surface protection by nanotech and nature's tech
- Minimising the impacts of biocides
- Matting (with an emphasis on UV formulations)

The authors unravel the mysteries behind coatings specifically formulated to keep buildings free of micobial growth.
Biocides are not the only way to control problems of microbiological contamination. In the emerging field of hygienic coatings, a range of novel technologies are converging to create surfaces which reduce contamination risks in food preparation areas, operating theatres and many other critiral zones.
Our current lifestyles - fast foods, fast travel, air conditioning, combined with an ageing population - demand increased attention to minimising dangerous microbiological contamination. At the same time, antibiotic resistance is increasing and traditional methods of control through biocides and aggressive cleaners are coming under stricter regulation.
Attention is now being increasingly paid to coatings specifically formulated to aid in the fight against bacterial and related contamination, known under the general term 'hygiene coatings'. Much of the technology required has been developed relatively recently and only a few coatings manufacturers are so far active in this field. However, the formation of a PRA 'coatings group' for hygienic coatings has attracted a geast deal of interest and the first major international conference on hygienic coatings is taking place this year in Brussels. PPCJ will be reporting on the event in the next issue.Note de contenu : - The need for hygiene
