Various chemicals are used in leather finishing. The introduction of nanoparticles in leather finishing has revolutionized the leather industry. They are used to produce various types of leathers and to meet the end user requirements. The aim of the work was to coalesce the fields of leather technology and nanotechnology for obtaining superior quality of leather with improved performance. Synthesis of titanium metal oxide nanoparticles was done by sol-gel process and used in leather finishing mixture as coating ingredients. The physical and chemical properties of the synthesized metal oxide nanoparticles were characterized by TEM, FE-SEM, EDAX, FT-IR and XRD. The surface morphology of the nanoparticle coated leather was evaluated by AFM. The finished leather was assessed for its film adhesion to evaluate the strength of the bonding between the leather surfaces and finish coating. The conventional finish system experience finish adhesion issue in due course of time. The titanium metal oxide nanoparticles coated leather exhibited increased adhesion property. TiO2 nanoparticles increased the intermolecular linkages between the leather finish coating and the leather surface. Note de contenu : EXPERIMENTAL :

Tannage Résumé : Due to the widespread application and popularity of lasers in recent times, the usage of laser cutting for leather applications has increased as well. Laser technology is needed to provide more consistent and effective results while cutting leathers that include complicated geometries particularly in several sectors where leathers are often utilized such as footwear, apparel and fashion accessories. In this investigation, the diode laser was preferred for leather cutting due to its regulated power density, compact size and portability whereas the CO2 lasers are uncontrollable. The benefit of employing a diode laser is that it can overcome some of the disadvantages associated with CO2 lasers such as power consumption, carbonization layer and geometric inaccuracy. There is no technique available to measure the carbonization at the leather cut contour edges. Hence an attempt has been made to investigate the carbonization percentage with the help of a machine vision system to improve the machining process. The technique of measuring carbonization can be used effectively in the leather industry for the accurate measurement of carbonization. The lower duty cycle with moderate pulse width modulation (PWM) and amplitude could produce lower carbonization layer. PWM frequency has a high influential role on determining carbonization in leather cutting. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The novel nanoparticle dispersion (NPD) of a high molecular weight copolymer in aqueous medium was investigated for its application as an aid to chrome exhaustion. The copolymer chain is made up of two types of monomers, viz. an acrylic ester and an amino acid derivative. The copolymer was synthesized using microemulsion polymerization methods. The monomer from the amino acid derivative provides conditions for microemulsion polymerization reaction in aqueous medium and facilitates formation of NPD of the copolymer in water. The developed NPD exhibits narrow particle size distribution with particle size at 40nm. The NPD is a free flowing liquid with flow characteristics almost similar to water, as shown from its low relative viscosity of 1.08 at 25°C. The zeta potential of NPD at -32.9mV demonstrates anionic nature of the copolymer particle and this may be provided from amino acid derived monomer. The NPD was tested in chrome tanning as an exhaustion aid. The NPD was used in chrome tanning experiment in the pilot level scale and the exhaustion and leather properties were found. From elaborate investigations, it is demonstrated that NPD could perform as a high exhaust chrome aid to provide 94% exhaustion of chromium when used during chrome tanning operation. The effect of NPD on the physiochemical characteristics of leather is presented.

Tannage Résumé : This work deals with the synthesis of water-based anionic sulfonated melamine-formaldehyde condensate (SMFC) with very low free formaldehyde content by sequential formulation. The structure of the oligomeric SMFC has been confirmed using spectroscopic methods like FTIR and UV. Molecular weight of the condensates was determined by Gel permeation chromatography (GPC). These oligomers were then evaluated as retanning agents. Chrome tanned wet blue leathers were treated with SMFC in different proportions (1, 2 and 3% based on shaved weight) to optimize the use of the product for physical properties of leather including fullness and dye uptake. Further, the leathers were subjected to conventional dyeing and fatliquoring processes. Control experiments without SMFC were also undertaken to judge the efficacy of the product. The results showed that SMFC treated leather exhibited improved grain tightness, softness, fullness and dye uptake in the resultant leather. The most important aspect of the product was very low (<10 ppm) free formaldehyde content in the treated leather.
